I’m fully aware of the dangerous situation in Honduras, but I don’t understand why they have to be stuck in Tijuana. I’ve read stories of Syrian refugees in the camps in Jordan and Lebanon. They applied to UNHCR and got approved to be transferred to Canada to have a better life. If we look at the list of countries that have signed the UNHCR refugee convention, Jordan and Lebanon are not in the list. They’re obliged only to not deport the refugees. Meanwhile, Mexico is in the list.

I also don’t understand why US government cannot consider them illegal, precisely because of the article 31. “The Contracting States shall not impose penalties, on account of their illegal entry or presence, on refugees who, coming directly from a territory where their life or freedom was threatened in the sense of article 1..” Directly, they were coming from Mexico not Honduras.

The Italian government has sponsored southern towns to create “refugee towns”, which was successful until the recent political change. This might be a model that US government can copy to help Mexican government in creating towns for them to start a new life instead of temporary camps.

Thanks for what you’ve done to help them.
